Outside of Manila, the city of Cagayan de Oro has the most number of financial institutions. At least four of the leading universal banks, and almost all of the country's leading commercial banks, have set up regional offices in the city, the city being the regional trading center.

Almost all municipalities have multi-purpose cooperatives or non-government organizations (NGOs). They complement government development efforts by maximizing the use of resources and satisfy the members' needs.

As of March 2006, a total of 431 banking and credit facilities were operating in strategic areas in Misamis Oriental.
